Teaching & Learning Philosophy

As I watch the above music video, I begin to think and relate this to any artistry be it Art, Music, Dance, or Drama. We all need to develop a sense of confidence. To become an artist means to step away from your comfort zone, to allow the self to be seen as we express. For this course my aim is not only to adhere to the curriculum requirements, but also to inspire a skill set to the students, which will help to build on their level of confidence. Expressive forms are ignited with a strong sense of confidence. We will build with various exercises that focus on the mind - body connection, as well as vocal exercises. The breathing exercises are important as they serve as an ease, to begin with the work of performance Drama.

Breathing Exercises
The following exercises were carried out in our class. I am glad that you found these beneficial, I particularly enjoyed reading the reflections. Please continue with these exercises, and feel free to share them with your family, friends and fellow students.

Inhalation and Exhallation
  • Make sure you are working in a clear space
  • Stand together with a student
  • Take a deep breath in and then upon exhalation you will walk, breathing out as you walk
  • It is important to walk until the end of the exhalation of breath
  • As the exhalation ends, you should come to a standstill
  • Again take a deep breath in, then upon exhalation you will walk, breathing out as you walk.
  • And again as above walk until the end of the exhalation of breath.
  • As exhalation ends, you should come to a stand still
  • This exercise should be repeated about 10 times (10 breaths).
Deep Sea Meditation
  • Play the meditation music
  • Sit in a circle
  • Focus on the sounds of water
  • After a few minutes of focusing on these sounds, close your eyes
  • As you close your eyes continue to focus on the waves and the sounds of water
  • Take a deep breath in and a deep breath out
  • Repeat this
  • You may decide to do this for about 10 times
  • You may decide to increase or decrease the number of breathes
This exercise is from the lineage of Judith Koltai, shared by Professor Darcy Callison, York University, Toronto.

"The breathing exercises were interesting. It was a combination of walking and breathing to help calm your nerves before a performance. " - Spencer

"This class has helped me to clam myself outside of school if I am ever stressed or anxious so I found these activities very interesting and effective." - Eli

"The breathing exercises helped me with getting relaxed in the morning and really got me ready for the things we were going to do after the exercises." - Anas

Our Class Emoji Activity - Section 1 (Morning Class)

Overall Comments:
I found all of the Emoji activities completed by you were very interesting and innovative. I liked the creative choice of emoji for the words. I am glad this activity helped you to understand the content of the short monologue. For method's of improvement, I would like to suggest that we think more deeply about the descriptive words, and maybe underline more as much as possible, so that we can really flesh out our ideas to develop this task further. - Thank you for your participation 😊
