Act 2 Scene 1

Staging
For this scene we will understand more about staging. How are characters entering and exiting the stage.
Please complete the following 2 questions
1. What is a script?
2. What is staging?

Task
Create a stage using a shoe box (complete instructions will be given in class)
Form groups of 4, each person will be assigned a role as follows:

1. Materials Person
2. Time manager
3. Manager
4. Recorder
5. Presents what the group has completed

Presentation
When you present the shoe box answer the two questions:
1. How are your stage directions connected to the script?
2. What makes your shoe box stage unique and original?

Feed Forward:
I found all of your presentation's interesting. The level of creativity varied from group to group. All of the groups connected the stage directions to the script. You all had unique presentations. For our next steps I would continue to encourage groups to use these activities to experiment with our creativity, also to build upon our presentation skills. Thank you all for your participation! :)


Scene Comparison. We will watch two editions of the balcony scene as follows: These clips are from the Baz Luhrman and Zefferelli editions. Please note that these clips are taken from You Tube. For full versions please login to the Oxford Next website with your student login.
As we watch take notes of the following, compare:
  • Blocking; Are there any characters blocking each other?
  • Gestures - are the gestures the same? How do they differ?
  • props - are the props the same, how do they differ?
  • Voice - How do the tones of voices change, do they change?
  • Setting / Atmosphere - Is the setting the same, is it different?
  • How does the difference or similarity in setting change or not change the atmosphere?

Romeo and Juliet Nurse - Act 2 Scene 4

Nurse acts as the go between for Romeo and Juliet. Juliet asks the nurse to find out what Romeo’s intentions are. (Scene 4)

When the nurse returns from meeting with Romeo, she jokes with Juliet, she tries hard not to tell  Juliet Romeo’s message. She finally tells him of Romeo’s plan to get married to her. (Scene 5)

Romeo and Juliet are married in Scene 6.

What does the Act 3, Scene 1 reveal about anger?
Reflection - Write a reflection about a time when you were angry. Did you act without thinking? What were the consequences of these actions? Continue this task for homework.
